Crystal Relics

(2023)

What remains when time collapses into stillness?

A collection of five luminous crystal cubes—each a vessel of secrets. Inside them, suspended in frozen light, are laser-burned 3D scenes: a snake’s bone, the remnants of insects, and delicate geometric forms. Created using high-precision 3D laser engraving technology, these sculptural light objects reveal extraordinary detail, visible only when illuminated from beneath.

Each cube holds its own atmosphere. A fossil-like beetle from a long-lost animation. A snake vertebra—never realized as a print, but reborn in crystal. Tiny icospheres are hidden between.

The forms feel ancient, yet digital. Fictional, yet familiar. As if they were artifacts from a parallel mythology.

Crystal Relics explores the boundary between science and superstition, technology and memory. Within each cube is a miniature world, layered and encoded. Like a message waiting to be decrypted.

A magical dive into a dark fictional world of organisms

The cubes were first developed in collaboration with Hradby Samoty, a festival known for its darkly poetic environment. This context sparked a shift toward the mystical and the shadowy—territories just outside the artist’s usual realm. What emerged are objects that glow with an inner life, casting quiet shadows and quiet questions.

Hours of lasering into the crystal

Point by point the laser burned out shapes that pass through each other or hide within each other.

The Snake bone

"Snake bone” was created as one of the first things for Hradby. It was supposed to be a 3D-printed piece of the snake's spine, as part of the installation. It didn't end up being created, but I've been obsessed with the shape. Real - unreal, mystical, and not at the same time.

The Beetle

The “Beetle” comes from an animation I created years ago and I like to use it in various modifications in my projects.

Taking the technology to a new dimension

I remember writing to the company that lasered my 3D models into these awesome crystal cubes for me. They did not think it would be possible to see an object containing other objects, like a matryoshka doll.

I'm delighted that they went along with it, we created the first experimental prototype and it worked great! Almost every one of these cubes also contains hidden small pieces, for example, the icospheres between these two bugs.

How does it work?

Angus, thank you so much for this video, great explanation!
